Replacing a device on a repair
From 0.19.3. Some repairs end with a different device rather than a fixed one — a laptop beyond repair, a warranty swap. Replace device, on the repair, records that properly instead of leaving it as a note.
It needs both repair.close and device.manage, because it closes the repair
and changes who holds two devices.
Choosing the new device
Section titled “Choosing the new device”Pick it from:
- Stock, an unissued device ready to go out;
- a loan already out to the person, if that is what they are keeping; or
- on its way — record one that has not arrived yet, and come back to it once it has.
The new device goes to the same person the repair was for.
What happens to the old device
Section titled “What happens to the old device”Say what becomes of it:
| Outcome | |
|---|---|
| Returned to the vendor | With an RMA reference |
| Kept as a spare | Back into stock |
| Kept for parts | Removed from service, not disposed of |
| E-waste | Removed from service |
| Held for a data wipe | Removed from service, pending a wipe |
What gets recorded
Section titled “What gets recorded”The repair, both devices, and the person’s history each carry the replacement, so “what does this person have” and a device’s own history stay accurate without anyone updating them separately.
A covered repair never asks the family to pay for the replacement. The same coverage rules that apply to a repaired device apply to a replaced one.
